Gurupi is located in the south of the state of Tocantins, at the water border between the Araguaia River and Tocantins River, on the BR-153 (Belém-Brasília Highway) 214 km from Palmas and 612 km from Goiânia, also known as "Capital of Friendship". It is the third largest city in the state, being a regional hub of the entire southern region. The main sources of income in the municipality are livestock and agriculture. An university city, with higher education institutions, including a campus at the Federal University of Tocantins (UFT), offers undergraduate courses in Agronomy, Biology, Forest Engineering, Biotechnological Engineering and Bioprocesses and Environmental Chemistry. In addition, there are post-graduation courses in Plant Production, Forestry and Environmental Sciences, Chemistry and Biotechnology at UFT-Campus of Gurupi. Among the graduate programs, that of Plant Production, received a concept 5 attributed by Capes, being the second concept 5 in the North region in the area of Agrarian Sciences.
