The Post-Graduation Program in Plant Production/UFT was officially created in july 2006, being recommended by CAPES with the concept of 03 for the Master's course. Since its creation, there have been improvements mainly in research, teaching and university extension. In 2010, the Master's course obtained the concept of 04 by CAPES Triennial Evaluation. In 2011, the PhD in Plant Production was approved by CAPES. In 2018, the Program obtained the concept of 05 by CAPES (quadrennium 2017-2020), demonstrating a fast evolution process over the years.

The Master course, whose first class started in 2007, selects students every semester and/or year, and currently include the enrollment of 23 master students. Up to now, 180 dissertations have been concluded, being distributed in the following research lines: Plant Health, plant breeding, Agronomic, Soil and Water Management. All master students completed the course in about 24 months.

The PhD in Plant Production, whose first class started in 2012, selects students each year and 46 PhD students are currently enrolled. Up to the present moment, 45 theses have been concluded, being distributed in the following research lines: Plant Health, Plant breeding, Agronomic, Soil and Water Management. All PhD students completed the course in about 37 months.

The Program has sought to achieve greater integration with society, including the community, the State, producers and companies, in order to strengthen the research necessary for regional and professional development. To achieve this objective, the program has sought to develop its own technological model of sustainable agricultural production, considering the anthropized environments of the Cerrado and lowland areas, which are also impacted by climate change. Based on this vision, the roles of teachers involved in research groups and program lines were defined so that graduate students have an active training in the face of this new reality that Brazilian agribusiness is experiencing. Master's students receive solid and multidisciplinary training, enabling their skills and development of research interests aimed at guaranteeing the food base in sustainable agriculture in the Cerrado and lowland areas, seeking to guarantee the maintenance of the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil, maintenance of water resources, with the development of plants resistant to water stress, preservation of useful organisms, including bees, natural enemies of aquatic and terrestrial environments, development of technological products from biological control and plant compounds, efficient for use against insect-pests and phytopathogenic microorganisms and the identification of plants with the potential to recover degraded areas. In this context, research is also included, including good agricultural practices, such as crop rotation, no-tillage, use of resistant local varieties, balanced nutrition, soil conservation, management to avoid creating pest and pathogen resistance to control methods, etc.

PhD students follow the same model proposed for the master's degree, however, additionally, emphasis has been given to the implementation of international partnerships, with study missions, in a sandwich model, allowing training in research centers recognized worldwide. Also included is the development of products and patents, resulting from the development of thesis, aimed at application in the model of sustainable agricultural production. In this context, the Post-Graduation Program in Plant Production has already managed to train a high number of masters and PhD students.

Alumni

Overall, the Program aims to train qualified professionals with differentiated training to work at a higher level, both as a professor and as a researcher. The graduate's profile is focused on the Program's research lines, with an emphasis on the development of professional skills to act in the generation of knowledge and obtaining products in the field of plant production, which can boost national science and agribusiness. Alumni are trained in areas of knowledge, allowing the establishment of relationships between the theoretical and applied fields, as they have been trained to carry out research projects, generating technical-scientific knowledge in their respective areas of expertise. In addition, another objective of the Program is to develop criticality and reflection on the social responsibilities of the profession and its relationship with the conscious use of environmental resources, considering population growth and its impact on economic, social and environmental aspects. Alumni in Plant Production are also prepared to carry out teaching activities, receiving didactic training, acting in activities related to undergraduate courses in Agronomy, Forestry Sciences and Biotechnology.
In view of the above, alumni should be able to::

  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills as a researcher and/or in teaching matters related to Plant Production and its related research lines;
  • Produce research and information regarding the generation of knowledge, in order to promote, in a sustainable way, the development of local, regional and national agribusiness;
  • Incorporate in your professional profile the critical and ethical posture necessary for the development of your skills;
  • Understand the need for the continuity of their professional training, being the disseminator of the provisional and temporal conception of knowledge;
  • Produce scientific knowledge to respond the demands of agribusiness, considering the context of its insertion and importance to the country's development.

The Program has achieved a high rate of professional insertion from its alumni. By the end of 2020, the Program had already had 228 graduates (master's and doctorate). Currently, 100% of doctoral alumni are directly involved in their area of training and specialization. Arround 84% are involved in teaching, research or extension activities in public institutions. These are permanent professors at Public Universities, Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology, as well as Research Centers and government agencies (SEBRAE, RURALTINS, NATURATINS, ADAPEC and SECRETARIAT OF AGRICULTURE). While 16% are engaged in teaching, research or extension activities in private companies, such as Universities (ULBRA, Faculdade Evangélica de Goianésia, Faculdade de Agronomia de Guaraí, UNIRG, etc.), as well as business consultants and/or farms located in several states, such as Pará, Bahia, Tocantins, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Piauí, etc. In the case of the master's degree, around 57% of alumni carry out their doctorate in institutions such as UFT (Plant Production), UFV, UFLA, UnB, ESALQ, among others. Around 24% of the master's alumni are involved in teaching, research or extension activities in public companies. While 12% of alumni are engaged in teaching, research or extension activities in private companies. This contribution was already expected due to the region's lack of professionals with a master's and doctoral degree.

Alumni from the Masters in Plant Production-UFT inserted in doctoral programs or in teaching, research or extension activities in public or private institutions/companies.

In the entire period from 2006 to 2020, we had 179 masters alumni. From this total, 102 studentes enrolled in doctoral programs, totaling 57%. Forty-four alumni are engaged in teaching, research or extension activities in public institutions (25%). While twenty-one engaged in teaching, research or extension activities in private companies (12%). Twelve alumni are outside the scope of research (6%).

Alumni from the Doctorate in Plant Production inserted in teaching, research and extension activities in public and private institutions/companies.

The program had a total of 49 doctoral alumni. From this total, 41 alumni are involved in teaching, research or extension activities in public institutions (84%). While eight alumni are involved in teaching, research or extension activities in private institutions (16%). No alumni is outside the the scope of research.
